Is there life after Prison? Work with women after release from prison in hospital psychotherapy service

Ann Perry is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist working with individuals in both an NHS secondary hospital setting in Basildon, Essex and in private practice in North London. She has been working as a psychotherapist for 21 years and is going to use her talk to discuss the work she did recently with a 59 year old lady who spent most of her adult life in and out of Prison. The longest sentence she served was 7 years for murder and she came into therapy with a wish to die as she had taken the life of someone and so her life must be taken too. She had attended AA whilst in Prison and had some psychotherapy input and the psychic work which began in prison was needing to be continued and readdressed.

The title of the talk is “IS THERE LIFE AFTER PRISON?” Life is referring to the patient’s psychic life wherein psychic change can take place. The work took place over an eighteen month period and the patient was seen on a monthly basis.

Ann Perry is hoping to share with you the nature of the changes which occurred within this woman as well as some of the issues which arise from being imprisoned and reflecting on the murder committed.

The talk is also a tribute to the psychic work begun in Prison and continued several years later in an NHS outpatient setting.
